While perusing a Sergeant Rock comic from 1980 I came across this Hostess Twinkies ad featuring Batman and Professor Plutonium. Not remembering the Professor I looked him up online and could find no reference to him, so I figured he was created just for this ad campaign. At the same time the newest Spider-Man movie was ramping up. Some things never change, they just get updated.

These ads were seemingly everywhere when one would pick up a magazine or comic book during the mid-20^th century. I learned my lesson the one (and only) time I sent off for one of these catalogs. You received advice for your $1, such as “visit an army surplus store”, or “ask if the owners are willing to bargain.” I would imagine most people were too embarrassed at being so gullible to ask for a refund.
